John Ahmed Herlihy takes readers on a journey of understanding to the heart of Islam, the world’s fastest
growing religion. Weaving details of Islam’s central beliefs and practices—its Five Pillars—with intimate
autobiographical details of his more than thirty years in the religion, Herlihy provides readers with an insightful
glimpse into a religion that currently claims more than one billion adherents and yet remains so often
misunderstood in the West. In Wisdom’s Journey Herlihy speaks openly about his conversion to Islam
and intimately retells his moving experiences while performing the pilgrimage to the sacred city of Mecca
and to the tomb of the Prophet in Medina.
Author John Ahmed Herlihy previously published Borderlands of the Spirit: Reflections on a Sacred Science of Mind with World Wisdom. It was described as "perhaps the best exposition of traditional cognitive psychology to have appeared in recent times", and is a series of reflections on mankind's relationship with Absolute Reality and the lesser reality of our own multi-dimensional nature. In Wisdom’s Journey, Herlihy speaks less theoretically, and demonstrates many of the concepts of his earlier book through the story of his own direct experiences.

"Wisdom’s Journey: Living the Spirit of Islam in the Modern World comes from an American convert to Muslim thinking and pairs a spiritual autobiography with a review of Islam’s importance and meaning in his life. From mystery and faith to the nature of Islamic prayer routines, Wisdom’s Journey is a pick for any spirituality library focusing on various religious paths."
—Midwest Book Review
“Wisdom’s Journey is a wayfarer’s account of practicing what has been regarded as the world’s fastest growing religion—Islam—which claims over a billion adherents and regrettably is all-too-often misunderstood in the West, especially with the widespread xenophobic phenomena of “Islamophobia.” John Herlihy provides the reader with an in-depth portrayal of this faith and how one can uncompromisingly practice traditional religion, without being an “extremist” or “fundamentalist,” in the midst of the modern world that is vehemently anti-spiritual. This book will also be of value to those who are still undecided about what spiritual path to embark upon as well as those who are still of “two minds” about how unwavering one needs to be about spiritual life. Herlihy intertwines the rudiments of Islam’s central way of life—its Five Pillars—with personal accounts of the author’s living three decades in this Abrahamic faith which gives the book the coloring of a pilgrims journal, containing many insightful exchanges among fellow travelers, sacred landscapes and lucid moments—directing the reader toward the essence of Islam.
“…This new book will make a significant contribution to offset a host of literature on Islam that obscures and deceives rather than elucidates and reveals its heart as this hook does. This text underscores many facets of the spiritual path that are either overlooked or not fully understood. The author aptly integrates the exoteric dimensions of Islam in the light at the esoteric to present this spiritual tradition in its fullness. Wisdom’s Journey is recommended for all those who long to know more about authentic Islam and its practices as well as those already living within this faith. We hope that this work, like the other writings offered by the traditionalist or perennialist authors, will assist in clarifying the numerous misconceptions about Islam and its practitioners.”
