Video Description

Catherine Schuon (1924–2021) was the wife of the Swiss philosopher, author, artist, and poet Frithjof Schuon (1908–1998). In this clip, she explains how the revelation of a religion also brings about its own style of art, architecture, furnishings, and crafts. When she says, “And so, as much as possible, he wanted it to be furnished in a traditional way,” she was referring to her husband’s preferences for the decor of their home. Catherine Schuon was herself a talented editor, translator, and artist. These talents are well displayed in the book “Art from the Sacred to the Profane: East and West” (World Wisdom, 2007; Art from the Sacred to the Profane: East and West). She edited this illustrated volume of selected chapters from Frithjof Schuon’s extensive works. The book delves deeply into many of the points raised in this clip. In addition, many of her own paintings are featured in the illustrated children’s book “A King James Christmas: Biblical Selections with Illustrations from Around the World” (Wisdom Tales Press, 2012; A King James Christmas: Biblical Selections with Illustrations from Around the World). Catherine Schuon also co-edited “A King James Christmas.”
