kurapudavai (kūrapuḍavai)

(Language: Tamil)

Short Description: The 18-cubit sari worn by the Tamil Brahmin bride

Long Description: The 18-cubit sari worn by the Tamil Brahmin bride (particularly during the mangalva-dharana ceremony). Kurapudavai means new sari (krira meaning new and puclavai meaning sari). It is also believed that kura denotes the place where such saris were once made, that is “Kuranadu” (Koranadu), near Mavuram in Tanjavur district. In keeping with the expensive marriages of our times, the kurapudavai, usually a Kancipuram silk sari, costs anything between Rs 2,000 and Rs 10,000.
