Description

This is the companion book to the 2 disc DVD set Native Spirit and The Sun Dance Way .

Native Spirit: The Sun Dance Way is the story of the remarkable preservation of an ancient cultural and spiritual way of life. In the two-disc documentary, and the companion book, American Indian tribal elders and spiritual leaders tell of the struggle to preserve the way of their Grandfathers in the face of a government bent on their destruction. There are special features on traditional Indian practices, tribal life, and advice by prominent elders to those seeking a balance between the modern world and the world of the spirit. Also included is a biography of Thomas Yellowtail, a revered Sun Dance chief of the Crow tribe for over 30 years, who was raised by pre-reservation Indians. With over 100 color and sepia photographs from as early as 1903, along with the only video footage officially sanctioned by the Sun Dance, this documentary reveals the symbolism and mystical beauty of the ancient Sun Dance ceremony, which still remains at the center of the spiritual life of many Plains Indians today.

Native Spirit: The Sun Dance Way includes rare interviews with such American Indian elders as John Arlee, Janine Pease, Joe Medicine Crow, James Trosper, Arvol Looking Horse, and Inez Talamantez. The words of Thomas Yellowtail are brought to life by the internationally known Native Peoples actor, Gordon Tootoosis. Native Spirit is a stunning feast of rare visual images from Crow and Shoshone religious existence.

About the Author(s)

Thomas Yellowtail

Medicine Man and Sundance Chief Thomas Yellowtail (1903-1993) was a pivotal figure in Crow tribal life and one of the most admired American Indian spiritual leaders of the last century. As a youth he lived in the presence of old warriors, hunters, and medicine men who knew the freedom and sacred ways of pre-reservation life. As the principal figure in the Crow-Shoshone Sun Dance religion during the last half of the 20th century, he was important in perpetuating the spiritual traditions of his Crow tribe.

Yellowtail's advice on following the ancient ways in the modern world has inspired many Indians, and many non-Indians as well. His words can be found in:
