Kabīr was an Indian mystic born around 1440. He is widely recognized as a saint among Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs. According to hagiographic accounts, his mother became pregnant after visiting a Hindu shrine. Upon delivery the child was given up for adoption and Kabîr was raised among a Muslim community of weavers. His spiritual perspective belongs to bhakti, the devotional longing for union with God. This perspective can be found expressed in his fresh, accessible poetry, the greatest of which is collected in the work, Bijak.
