Long Description: Literally, “what is heard;” in Hindu tradition, a category of sacred writings understood to be the direct revelation of eternal Truth, including the Vedas, the Saṃhitās, the Brāhmaṇas, the Āraṇyakas and the Upanishads (Upaniṣads); in contrast to smriti (smṛti).
