Jane Fatima Casewit

Jane Fatima Casewit is a writer, editor, translator, and educator who has contributed to several World Wisdom projects. Mrs. Casewit wrote the essay “Islamic Cosmological Concepts of Femininity and the Modern Feminist Movement,” which was included in The Betrayal of Tradition: Essays on the Spiritual Crisis of Modernity. For A Spirit of Tolerance: The Inspiring Life of Tierno Bokar, she translated the book from the original French and co-wrote the Preface. She was the editor of Education in the Light of Tradition: Studies in Comparative Religion, to which she added an introductory Editorial. Most recently, Mrs. Casewit translated into English A Living Islamic City: Fez and Its Preservation, a highly regarded book by the Perennialist author Titus Burckhardt.

Mrs. Casewit has a background in linguistics and education. After completing an Associates of Arts degree at the now American University in Paris in French and political science, she went on at the University of Durham in England to complete an honors Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese Language and Civilisation. She then immigrated to Morocco for many years where she married, taught English and linguistics, and raised a family. During this time, Ms. Casewit managed to go back to the U.K. at the University of Manchester to complete a Master of Philosophy degree in Education. While living for several years in Egypt and Saudi Arabia with her family, Jane Fatima Casewit pursued studies in Arabic, Quran, and women in traditional societies. Having met the author Abdel Wahid Radhu in Kashmir, she translated and edited his recounting of his childhood accompanying the Muslim caravan route from Ladakh to Lhasa carrying tribute to the Dalai Lama. In addition to the projects mentioned above, Jane Fatima Casewit was co-editor of Jesus, Son of Mary: in the Quran and According to the Teachings of Ibn Arabi by Maurice Gloton (Fons Vitae 2016). She edited The Spiritual Teachings of the Prophet: Hadith with commentaries by Saints and Sages of Islam by Tayeb Chourief, also published by Fons Vitae (2011). Mrs. Casewit edited A Sufi Commentary on the Tao Te Ching: The Way and Its Virtues by Seyyed Hussein Nasr (Fons Vitae 2025). She also wrote a children’s book entitled Mr. Griffin and the Treasure Hunt: An Adventure through Symbols (Readers Magnet 2024).

Mrs. Casewit has been traveling around the world since her childhood. Among the remarkable experiences she has had, she notes the privilege of visiting the home and family of Tierno Bokar in Bandiagara, as well as the mosque, which has not changed since Tierno Bokar’s time.  She also met the last living talibé (student) of Tierno Bokar and the former’s family who perpetuate the nobility and gnosis of the Tijani way in West Africa today.

Jane Fatima Casewit is retired and now lives in Maryland, outside Washington DC.
